Health and Safety

Do the events or activities you run expose staff and customers to risk of harm?

Does your business provide Outdoor Adventure Activities, as classified by WorkSafe and regulated under the NZ Adventure Activity Certification Scheme?

Do you simply want assurance that you are meeting the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015?

Do you want to be able to tell your current and prospective customers, that you are meeting the highest standards of health and safety in New Zealand and internationally?

Whatever standard you need to meet, whether it’s listed below or not, we can help. So, just reach out.

  • In the information below, you will notice that the majority of our certification products can either be delivered completely off-site, or with an on-site component, with the exception of the Adventure Activity Certification, which requires both.

To clarify what this means: An off-site documentation audit (also referred to as an SMS Documentation audit) will verify that your safety documentation aligns with and satisfies the requirements of the relevant standards and legislation.

In order to certify that the physical delivery of your activities aligns with that documentation, and any standards, guidelines and good practice documents, an auditor needs to carry out a site-visit and audit a sample of the activities you provide. This is about ensuring their intent is being implemented in the workforce on a day-to-day basis.

When you contact us to discuss the context and specific needs of your business, we are happy to work with you to determine which certification and which methodology will be most appropriate for you.

Adventure Activity Certification
(NZ Adventure Activities Certification Scheme)

  • Full On-Site AND Off-Site Documentation Audit (Both required)

This certification meets the mandatory safety audit requirements for Adventure Activities Operators (AAOs) as defined according to the Health and Safety at Work (Adventure Activities) Regulations. The regulations were made under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and require commercial operators to pass safety audits in order to become registered by WorkSafe New Zealand. Without doing so, an AAO may not legally trade.

A safety auditor will audit an operator for compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, the Adventure Activity Regulations, the Safety Safety Audit Standard and the Activity Safety Guidelines that apply to the adventure activities you provide.

If you are unsure whether your organisation’s or event’s activities meet the regulatory definition of an Adventure Activity, take a look on the WorkSafe website, or contact WorkSafe directly, at aao@worksafe.govt.nz.

Then, contact us to get the ball rolling with your Adventure Activities audit.

  • Full On-Site Audit or Off-Site Documentation Audit

Qualworx is equipped to audit against ISO21101 – the international safety management standard for adventure tourism – which Qualworx played a key role in developing.

ISO21101 Certification is the gold standard of safety assurance for an adventure operator. It’s great for large or complex operations, or those that simply want to demonstrate to clients that they meet the ISO21101, having been checked and certified to the most rigorous possible standards of safety.

Our audit team will carry out a detailed review of your safety system as well as how it is being applied, across a sample of the activities you offer. Where appropriate, Technical Experts with deep experience in your activities will be available to provide comprehensive feedback.

We will work with you to help you understand how your safety systems have been designed, how they are working in practice, how they are being delivered to clients, and what improvements your business can make to further enhance safety.

For New Zealand operators who complete one of our other audits, with just a few extra steps and a small additional cost, we can include an ISO21101 certification.

ISO 45001 is the international standard for health and safety at work, intended to safeguard employees and visitors from work-related accidents and diseases. • Full On-Site Audit or Off-Site Documentation Audit

Our Event Safety Go Audit Certification is tailored specifically to organisations and individuals running events, regardless of scale, that expose participants to serious risk of harm. This audit process will verify that your event is meeting a high standard of safety management.

    Adventure Activities

There may be situations where event organisers are providing Adventure Activities (as defined by the regulations) and will therefore need to comply with the Health and Safety at Work (Adventure Activities) Regulations 2016.

According to their website, WorkSafe “expects that most events will not be subject to these regulations. However, there may be situations where event organisers are providing adventure activities and will therefore need to achieve registration as an adventure activity operator”.

If this is the case, please see the information above regarding our Health and Safety at Work Regulations 2016 (Adventure Activities) Certification.

If you are unsure whether your organisation’s or event’s activities meet the regulatory definition of an Adventure Activity, take a look on the WorkSafe website, or contact WorkSafe directly, at aao@worksafe.govt.nz.

    Non-Adventure Activities

Even if your event doesn’t meet the regulatory definition of an Adventure Activity, you still owe duties to participants under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015. In such cases, we are able to carry out an audit to certify your event’s compliance with this legislation to provide your event participants with the assurance that you are adhering to the required standards of safety management.

Schools – Education Outside the Classroom

  • Full On-Site or Off-Site Documentation Audit

Our EOTC audits were designed with input from Education Outdoors NZ, and we have skilled, knowledgeable and experienced auditors with proven track records in the outdoor and education sectors. We understand the role of EOTC in schools.

When you complete one of our Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) audits, it means that your EOTC programme has been certified as meeting the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act as well as the specific requirements for schools.

This certification gives teachers, students, parents and Boards of Trustees confidence in the systems and processes that are in place to keep students safe as they participate in outdoor education.

A documentation audit will entail a full review of the school’s safety management documentation, checking it against the EOTC guidelines in the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015. The school sends their documents to the auditor, and no site visit is required. This Certification is a good option for schools with lower risk activities and is occasionally used as a starting point before moving to a full Outdoor Education Audit Certification.

A full, on-site audit will include the document review above, as well as a site-visit to observe and evaluate a sample of the activities being delivered. This is a comprehensive review of the school’s EOTC programme, providing quality assurance right across the programme from design to delivery and implementation. It certifies that your systems are robust, practical and working as intended.

    Adventure Activities

Schools are exempt from the Adventure Activity Regulations, however in some circumstances, schools we work with will opt to carry out a full, on-site audit as above, and additionally request an assessment of compliance with relevant Activity Safety Guidelines.
